The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Welcome back 5th Graders! All of your hard work in Fourth Grade has paid off and you are ready to become leaders and role models in our school! During the first few weeks, we will discuss the ways you can lead by example and demonstrate to the younger students what it means to be a Ludlow Panther! I can't wait to begin the school year, and I am looking forward to experiencing all of the learning growing we will experience as a class this year!

Who is Mr. Lucas?

I am a graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Elementary Education. This will be my 8th year teaching at Ludlow, I taught the first six years in 3rd Grade, and last year I began teaching 5th Grade Math and Science. I am looking forward to my learning and growing with my fifth grade classes this year!

Like you, I will also be in school this year as I finish my last classes for my Master's Degree. I also have two sons, Jacob (18) and Tyler (24). Jake will be attending Northern Kentucky University this year and is a Musical Theatre major, and Tyler is a student at Cincinnati State.

Try this Math Riddle before the first day of class, if you solve it correctly I will have a prize for you!

Polly's Party

Question

Birthday treats: Package containing 6 cupcakes; package containing 5 juice boxes; package containing 4 ice-cream sandwiches; package containing 10 paper plates.

Polly is planning to invite 14 people to her birthday party.

She went shopping with her mother for party supplies. They went through the express check-out line because they had fewer than 15 items. Polly and her mother bought cupcakes, plates, ice-cream sandwiches, and juice boxes. There were 3 more cupcakes than juice boxes, but the same number of packages of each.

They wanted to make sure that each person at the party got one of each item. They also wanted to have the least possible amount left over.

How many packs or boxes of each item did they buy? How many items in all did they buy?
